1. Essay Topic
Essays must focus on social issues that are of concern or affect today's youth.  Possible themes are:  Any social issue that concerns you, racism, pollution, endangered species conservation, natural resource conservation such as water, global warming, drugs, immigration, violence, bullying, vandalism, body image and eating disorders among youth, homelessness, video game culture and addiction, obesity among youth, learning and behavioral disabilities in the classroom and their impact, recycling, medical research:  cloning, animal experimentation, gene manipulation, etc.

2. Qualifications
From ElementaryGr. 4 to High School Gr. 12 who lives in Canada, USA or Korea.

3. Starting &Deadline
: September 5th ~  October 11th, 2008

4. . Prizes
1st Place (1 person) for each category: $300 each & anthology
2nd Place (2 people) for each category: $100 each & anthology
Honourable Mentions : anthology of the Contest.

Announcement of winners
Winners will be informed by Nov. 7th,2008.  In CNDream Newspaper. In some cases, the date might not be the same as noted.

Elementary Gr. 4-6        300-500 N/A
Junior High  Gr. 7-9        500-800 Bibliography
High School Gr. 10-12 800-1000 Bibliography


5. Contest Rules & guidelines:  
• All submissions must contain original material, and may not have been previously published, accepted for publication, or have been a winner in another contest prior to the October 11th deadline.
•Topic:  choice of your own based on the contest theme
•Styles of writing:  You can use various styles such as Factual Report, Opinion Essay, Persuasive Essay, etc. (*Refer to Reading Town Calgary Blog)
•Number of essays permitted: as many as you wish; however, topics need to be different as well as writing styles.  
•Structure: All essays must be a minimum of 5 paragraphs.
Please include
1. A strong thesis statement, without saying "I am going to write about...."
2. Topic sentences for each paragraph.
3. Don't go over the allowed number of words.
•Be sure to consider your audience, and your essay should be formal at all times; use your own discretion when stating your personal opinions.
•Standard manuscript format: All submissions must be in Word format, double spaced at 12 pt font, and each page to include title and page number only.  Remember Word can count your words for you!
•Include a cover page listing the writer’s name, address, email address, phone number, word length, grade, contest category i.e.) Elementary, Junior High or High School.
•In addition to hard copy, all entrants must submit their work by email.
•No entries will be returned.
•Submission implies CN Dream/ Reading Town Calgary are granted the right of publication as winners will be published in our contest anthology. Entering the contest also grants CN Dream/ Reading Town Calgary the right to publish the entrant’s names in the contest anthology and on their websites.

6. Submitting your essay
•All submissions are accepted only by mail deliveries, courier, hand deliveries, or drop-off .
•Either emailed or faxed entries will not be accepted.  
•Only entrants in Korea are allowed to send their submissions by email.
Please make sure to email or call us to check your entry confirmation number when submitting your essay by mail.

•Be sure to include your name, grade, school, style of essay, and a contact (both telephone number & email). Confirmation number will be given when both entry fees and submissions are received.

7. Entry Fees : $10 per submission—(10,000won in Korean Currency.)
• Fees must be received by October 11th. Only Cheque is accepted and must be included with all entries and be payable to Reading Town Calgary.
• Entrants in Korea must deposit entry fees into the following account: 국민은행 815-24-0356-803 예금주: 김형국
