Two weeks ago, Daewook Kwon, 44, quit his job with a <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Richmond food supplier.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
The Korean immigrant reportedly wanted to earn more money and was talking about moving his wife and 18-year-old daughter to the United States.
On Saturday though, he and his family were found dead in their south Surrey home and RCMP are investigating what they are calling a double murder-suicide.
Kwon, his wife Keumhee Kwon, 44, and their daughter, whom friends and neighbours called Daisy, were found dead Saturday evening in their home after police were notified by a concerned family friend who hadn't seen or heard from them in a few days.
Surrey RCMP were saying little Sunday about the case and would not confirm the names of the deceased, but confirmed their ages and said police are investigating a double murder suicide.
In a written statement, Const. Tim Shields said the cause of two of the deaths are unknown and autopsies will be conducted early this week.
On Sunday morning, friends visited the house on
18th Avenue to leave flowers and cards in a hand-painted mailbox that was already crowded with old newspapers and mail.Police will not say when the family died, but Junghee Lee -- who lives in the neighbourhood -- said her daughter had not seen Daisy at school on Thursday or Friday.
Lee said Daisy was a "very talented" pianist who was preparing to graduate from Semiahmoo secondary school in June and planning to study music at the University of B.C. in September.
Although Lee did not know the devout Christian family well, she said she had heard the family had financial problems and "had a lot owing."
Yang Joon -- who appeared Sunday afternoon to pay his respects at the house -- said he worked with Daewook Kwon at Apsun Foods Inc. in Richmond until Kwon quit, about two weeks ago.
Joon was not certain why Kwon quit his job with the food supplier, but believed he wanted to earn more money.
"He owed money," Joon said. "I don't know how much."
Joon said Kwon also ran his own small food importing business, but business had been slow recently.
"He wanted to move to the U.S. for a job," Joon said.
Last Wednesday, Joon visited Kwon and the two went for coffee at White Rock beach.
Joon said his friend seemed "a little bit down, but he was okay."
Although he had only been unemployed for two weeks, Kwon was beginning to get frustrated and was talking about leaving Surrey for the U.S., Joon said.
Kwon and his family moved to Surrey about four years ago from Calgary, where he had owned a "smoke and coffee shop," Joon said. The family moved to Canada from Korea seven or eight years ago.
