RISE for health and wellness는 고등학생들을 위한 Health literacy 여름 프로그램입니다. 이 프로그램은 이민자 및 난민 배경을 가진 고등학생 (또는 최근 졸업 한 학생)을 대상으로 합니다.
세션은 캘거리 대학생들과 의과 대학교수 및 지역 사회 파트너의 전문가들이 주도합니다. 주제는 social determinants of health, mental health, and careers in healthcare 등을 포함합니다. 학생들은 멘토링을 받고 프로그램이 끝날 때 발표될 여름 프로젝트를 통해 research 하는 방법도 배웁니다
이 프로그램을 통하여 참가자의 건강에 대한 지식과 이해도를 높이고 학생들이 지식을 각자의 지역 사회에 전달하는 것을 도울 것 입니다. 또한 이 프로그램을 통해 학생들은 다양한 의료 직업에 대해 더 많이 배우고 이해할 수 있습니다.
학생들은 세션이 끝나면 수료증을 받게 되며 다음 해에 프로그램 개발 및 연구를 위해 자원 할 수 있게 됩니다.
프로그램은 온라인 (zoom)을 통하여 진행됩니다. 첫 번째 세션은 2021년 7월 3일 토요일 오후 12시부 터 오후 2시까지 열립니다. 그 후 세션은 매주 화요일과 목요일 오후 2시-4시 30분부터 2021 년 8월 26일까지 진행됩니다. 최종 세션은 학생들의 연구 프로젝트를 선보이며 8 월 28일 토요일에 열립니다.

RISE for health and wellness is a summer program aimed to empower immigrant and refugee thinkers with the knowledge and ability to promote health and wellness within their respective communities. Sessions are open to high school students (or those who have recently graduated) from immigrant and refugee background. Youth will be able to be a part of a research project that is focusing on identifying the needs of immigrant youth related to health and wellness, advocacy and knowledge engagement.
Sessions will be led by experts within the medical school and community partners, and will focus on topics such as the social determinants of health, anti-racism, and the importance of mental health etc. Speakers will not only shed light on these topics, but will also inspire students to carry this knowledge into their communities. Throughout the summer, they will also learn to identify and search for the accurate information. The students will receive mentorship and have an opportunity to develop research skills through a summer-long project which will be presented at the end of the program.
We believe that our work will increase health literacy in participants, and inspire students to carry this knowledge into their respective communities. This act holds precedence in the immigrant community where individuals often find themselves lost in the health-care system, and face barriers preventing access to proper information. This program will also allow students to learn and understand more about the different health care professions.
Students will receive a certificate of completion upon the end of the sessions and will gain the right to volunteer the following year for program development and research.
The first session will be held on Saturday, July 3rd 2021 from 12pm-2pm. Afterwards, sessions will be every Tuesday and Thursday from 2pm-4:30pmuntil August 26th 2021. The final session will showcase students’ research projects and will be held on Saturday, August 28th.
