이 글은 찬이가 교육대학에 제출했던 자기 소개서 입니다. 영문과 부족하지만 저가 한글로 번역한 것을 함께 실습니다. 직역을 하지 않고 의역을 했습니다. 참고가 됐으면 좋겠습니다. 찬이의 Profile Last November, I was watching teachers’ strike on TV. There was a teacher was trying to cross the picket line and the group of striking teachers were blocking him and yelling at him. But he did not say anything and went into the school building. I was thinking who was really a good teacher. First couple of day, I enjoyed extra holidays. But later I felt sad because I found that they, teachers and the minister of education, were using the kids to get what they wanted. If I had been a teacher, what would I have done? In the past two years, I have participated in many activities that have convinced me that I would like to be a teacher. I have gone through experiences in my life that enabled me to obtain certain qualities needed by a teacher. These skills and talents are ones required by a good teacher. They will allow me, I believe, to become the kind of teacher that I wish I had. I cannot forget my first few years in elementary school. I discovered that I was in the minority among all the kids since I was the only Asian student in my class. I was also the smallest and the shyest student. During this period in my life, I experienced many bullies who I had to face by myself. I also encountered many problems since I was a Korean-Canadian. Other students stereotyped me as a good fighter and thought I was able to do Taewon-Do. This perception resulted in many challenges by other students to fight. They also called me racial names and would pretend to speak my language just to aggravate me. I have tried to remember if any of my teachers helped me with my shyness and lack of participation in class. Unfortunately, I cannot remember any. All I can recall is receiving an “Unsatisfactory” in participation on my report cards. I wish I had a teacher who understood the pain and troubles I experienced. I now realize that the teachers I had were mostly unaware of my problems and troubles. They noticed my lack of participation but did not actively do anything to correct it. Teachers must be alert and react to their students’ problems. Fortunately, I had parents who were patient and encouraging. I had very passive and negative attitude. Although my father tried very hard to correct it, I always said, “I can not do it.” I remember that my father urged me to kick the soccer-ball 50 times everyday against the fence in the backyard since I was one of the worst players in the team. A turning point in my life was the Grade 4 speech competition. Since I was so shy this speech competition was a very frightening event for me. Having a lisp and doing a speech on “Socks” is not an easy thing to do. However, with determination, and a lot of practice with my father I received second place in my whole school! After that point many things began to change for me. I made new friends, I had more confidence, and my self-esteem grew tremendously. I tried my best to play soccer in the field and although I was the smallest and worst player in the team, I never quit and kept practicing with my father. With the help of a wonderful thing called puberty, I started to excel in my soccer skills. Currently, I am in the starting line-up for my school soccer team and have been asked to play several times for my house-league’s all-star team. I also played hockey for four years and I am a good basketball player. I have come a long way since my elementary school years. I am no longer shy, I have more confidence, I have a positive attitude, and most importantly, I have a much higher self-esteem. Surpassing challenges such as the speech competition and soccer taught me a valuable lesson, “Never give up and try hard.” This lesson can also apply to teaching. Teachers should never give up on students who are troublemakers, or who have low self-esteem. I currently volunteer at my church as a Sunday school teacher. I have the responsibility of teaching six Grade 5 students about the bible for approximately 30 to 40 minutes. Teaching Grade 5 students is not an easy task. The boys are rowdy and fight constantly. The girls are always chatting about the latest music group. There is the “cootie” factor and of course they have very short attention spans. When I first started teaching, I was given a binder with all the lesson plans and the Sunday school curriculum. However, whenever I tried to teach a lesson from the binder, the students’ minds started drifting and they got restless. So I decided to revise the lesson plan in order to make it more interesting. Instead of the regular plan, I created my own game, “Bible Jeopardy”, where I test their knowledge of the bible using certain parts of the original lesson for questions. To make the class even more interesting, I incorporated a prize at the end of class. The prize could range from candy, a simple magic or card trick, or various other treats. Since then I have not encountered one complaint from my students. From this experience, I learned that there are more creative methods of getting attention rather than yelling or punishment. Sometimes punishment is necessary but alternative methods are often more effective. There is a child whose name is “B” in my church’s Sunday school. He is in Grade 2 and he came from Korea last year. He is a very emotional boy. There is another boy who constantly picks on “B” every Sunday. He is in grade 4 and his name is “C”. One time in particular, “C” kept harassing “B” and accused “B” of stealing something from him. It came to the point where “B” could not handle the torment any longer and ran off crying. As it happened, I witnessed the confrontation and went looking for him. When I found him, he was crying in a corner by himself. When I asked him what was wrong he stated, “He always makes fun of me, always, always.” Understanding how he felt, since I once was in the same position, I sat down beside him and started to tell him how I once used to be just like him. I gave him some advice about how to handle insults and accusations from others. I told him that words could not hurt him if he does not let them. If he knows that the words are not true then they are just words. Fortunately, he understood what I was talking about but I saw that he was still upset by the confrontation he had. I resorted to a simple magic trick to make him feel better. I took a quarter and made it look as though I took it out of his ear and gave it to him. His eyes went round and his hand immediately went to his ear. I then took a loonie and did the same with his other ear and told him he was rich. He started laughing and eventually forgot about what had just happened. Experiences like these encourage me that I do have the skills to become a teacher. I enjoy helping children with their problems since I experienced most of them myself when I was their age. It gives me great satisfaction when I can help children with their problems and actually understand what they went through. In grade 12, I was nominated by one of my teachers to become a “Peer Mentor”. Peer Mentors is a group of senior high school students that make the transition from Grade 8 to Grade 9 as smooth as possible for new students. They are basically big brothers and sisters to the new students and guide them throughout the year until they make the transition. Part of our job was to visit our assigned Grade 9 homerooms and present seminars which show them how to handle certain high school situations such as fights, drugs, and peer pressure. Being a Peer Mentor allowed me to help Grade 9 students with their problems and answer their questions. I helped students find their classes on the first day of school and talked to them in the hallways. Basically I tried to be their friend. Peer Mentor taught me how to understand people’s problems and give proper advice. This is a very important quality that teachers should possess. Good teachers are good problem solvers. Last year I had the privilege of being part of my church youth group's executive committee. The committee is made up of four people who are in charge of organizing events, youth rallies, retreats and many other things for the youth group. The youth group consists of approximately thirty teenagers from Grade 7 to OAC. As a member of the committee, my job was to phone students during the week to see how they were doing and remind them of upcoming events. I organized retreats and other events. Being on the executive committee taught another important quality that is needed by teachers’ leadership. On the executive I had to become a leader, set a good example for the youth group and become a role model to others. If teachers want students to listen to them and look up to them, they need leadership. A teacher can get students to do anything if students have respect. Students need a leader to give them instructions. A teacher that does not carry this quality will have a very difficult time getting students to follow instructions. Another talent acquired from being a member of the committee is organization skills. For any church event to be successful there must be organization. Without careful planning and preparation, the chances of an event being a success are very slim. For example, one summer retreat, our youth group planned to go tent camping. The executive committee bought a certain amount of food supplies that we thought would last for the whole retreat. However we underestimated the appetites of thirty teenagers and as a result, we had to starve for the last day. Teachers need organization skills and must prepare for any problem that may happen. A lesson is successful only if it is well prepared. My mother owns a dry-cleaning business and I help out at the store as much as I can. I sort the clothes and serve the customers. Once in a while, I handle the customer’s complaints. From this experience, I learned communication skills, negotiation skills and how to build good human relationships. All the experiences that I have gone through and all the activities that I have participated in have steered me towards choosing a future career in teaching. They have also taught me many things about what teaching is truly about. Teaching is not just a job. It is more than about making money and getting long holidays. It is more than teaching children how to solve equations and memorize facts and apply them. Teaching is about caring for children and paying attention to their problems and needs. Children are the world’s future. They will be the ones making the decisions and solving the problems of tomorrow. Teaching is one of our most critically important occupations. Teachers must teach children not only that they can become successful in the future, but also that they can become better human beings. I am confident that with my experiences and talents I can become a good teacher, maybe even a great one. 지난 11월 저는 TV에서 교사들이 Strike하는 장면을 보았습니다. 한 교사가 Picket line을 지나서 학교로 들어갈려고 했습니다. Strike를 하던 교사들은 그를 가로 막고 소리를 질렀습니다. 그러나 그는 아무 말도 하지 않고 학교 건물로 들어갔습니다. 저는 생각했습니다. ‘누가 정말 좋은 교사일까?’ 한 이틀간은 아주 신났습니다. 예기치 않았던 휴가였으니까요! 그러나 시간이 지나면서 저는 교사들과 교육부 장관이 자기들이 원하는 것을 얻기 위해서 어린 학생들을 이용하고 있다는 것을 알았습니다. 슬픈 일이었습니다. 만약 제가 교사였더라면 어떻게 했을까요!? 저는 지난 2년 동안 많은 과외 활동에 참석했습니다. 저는 많은 고민 끝에 교사가 돼야겠다고 다짐하게 되었습니다. 저는 저의 경험을 통해서 좋은 교사가 필요로 하는 자질을 가지게 되었습니다. 저의 경험과 재능이 제가 가지기 원했던 좋은 교사가 되는데 밑거름이 될 것이라고 믿습니다. 저는 처음 몇년간의 초등학교 생할을 잊을 수 없습니다. 저는 저의 반에서 단 하나의 아시안 학생이었습니다. 게다가 저는 제일 작고 수줍움이 많은 아이었습니다. 저는 시도때도 없이 Bully(약자를 괴롭히는 학생)들의 시달림을 받아야 했습니다. 제가 한국계 카나다인이었기에 힘든 점도 많았습니다. 반아이들은 제가 태권도를 한다고 생각하며 싸움을 걸어왔습니다. 아이들은 아시안이라고 놀리기도 했고 괴상한 소리로 한국말을 흉내내면서 저를 괴롭혔습니다. 저는 제가 수줍어 하며 공부시간에 제대로 발표하지 못 했을때, 관심을 가져 주었던 선생님이 있었던가? 생각해 보았습니다. 불행하게도 생각나는 사람이 한 사람도 없었습니다. 제 기억에 남아있는 것은 제 성적표의 학습 참여도에 “Unsatisfactory(보통 이하, 많은 노력이 필요함)”라는 단어뿐이었습니다. 저는 제가 격었던 아품과 문제점을 이해해준 선생님이 있었더라면 얼마나 좋았을까? 생각해 봅니다. 지금 생각해 보면 선생님들이 저의 어려움에 무관심했었거나 혹시 알았더라도 신경을 쓰지 않았던 것 같습니다. 선생님들은 학생들의 문제점에 항상 신경을 쓰고 발견되면 곧 행동을 취해야 합니다. 다행히 저에게는 인내심을 가지고 제게 용기를 주었던 부모님들이 계셨습니다. 저는 수동적이고 부정적인 생활 태도를 가진 아이였습니다. 저의 아버지는 그걸 고칠려고 무척 애를 쓰셨지만 저는 항상 “난 그거 못해요!”로 일관했습니다. 저는 저의 아버지가 Fence에다 하루에 축구공을 50번씩 차게 했던 것을 기억합니다. 저는 저의 팀에서 축구를 제일 못하는 아이였거든요. 그런데 저에게도 전환의 기회가 왔습니다. 초등학교 4학년 때 “말하기 대회”였습니다. 수줍움이 많았고 거의 말을 더듬다시피 하는 저에게 “말하기 대회”는 두려움의 행사 그 자체였습니다. 아버지와 준비하고 정말 많이 연습했습니다. 그 결과 저는 전교에서 2등을 했습니다. 저는 물론 다른 사람들도 상상을 하지 못한 결과였습니다. 그 후로 저에게 많은 변화가 왔습니다. 자신감과 자부심이 생겼고 많은 친구들도 사귈 수 있었습니다. 또 저는 팀에서 제일 작고 못하는 선수였지만 열심히했습니다. 축구실력은 점점 향상되었고 지금은 학교 축구팀의 선발 선수가 되었습니다. 그리고 동네 축구팀의 All-star팀에서도 여러번 시합을 했습니다. 저는 Hockey도 4년간 했고 농구도 잘 합니다. 저는 아주 멀고도 먼길을 돌아온 것 같습니다. 이제는 수줍움도 사라졌고 자신감이 있으며 저의 생활태도는 긍정적으로 바뀌었습니다. 말하기 대회와 축구는 저에게 아주 귀한 교훈을 주었습니다. “절대 포기하지 마라! 열심히 최선을 다해라”이 교훈은 교육에도 적용될 것입니다. 교사는 말썽쟁이들이나 자기 자신을 포기하는 학생들을 포기해서는 안될 것입니다. 저는 현재 교회에서 주일학교 교사를 하고 있습니다. 제가 하는 일은 여섯명의 5학년 학생들에게 30~40분간 성경을 가르치는 것입니다. 5학년 학생들을 가르친다는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 남자 아이들은 난폭하게 쉴새 없이 치고 받고 합니다. 여자 아이들은 최근에 뜨는 Music group에 대해서 항상 조잘댑니다. 그들은 집중력이 짧습니다. 처음 시작할 때 교안과 학습교재를 받았습니다. 그러나 받은 교안대로 가르칠려고 하면 아이들의 마음은 딴데 가있고 몸을 뒤틀었습니다. 생각다 못해 제나름대로 교안을 다시 만들었습니다. 새로운 성경 퀴즈를 만들고 더 흥마롭게 하기 위해서 약간의 상을 준비했습니다. 상이라고 해야 별것이 아니었습니다. 사탕을 주거나 간단한 요술을 보여주는 것이었습니다. 이 경험을 통해서 소리를 지르거나 체벌을 가하기 보다는 창조적이고 흥미로운 학습방법을 고안해야한다는 것을 배웠습니다. 때때로 체벌이 필요합니다. 그러나 좋은 학습방법이 더 효과적입니다. 저의 교회에 “B”라고 하는 2학년 아이가 있습니다. “B”는 작년에 한국에서 왔고 아주 마음이 여린 아이입니다. 또 다른 아이는 “C”라고 하는 4학년 아이입니다. “C”는 “B”를 항상 못살게 굽니다. 언젠가는 “C”가 “B”에게 자기 물건을 훔쳐갔다고 못살개 굴었답니다. “B”는 더 이상 참지 못하고 울음을 터트렸답니다. 저는 “B”를 찾아 다녔습니다. 제가 “B”를 찾았을 때 그는 모퉁이에서 혼자 울고 있었습니다. 제가 “왜 이렇게 울고 있니?”하고 물으니까 “C가 항상 놀리고 못살게 굴어요” 했습니다. 저도 똑같은 경우를 많이 격었으므로 그의 마음을 충분히 이해할 수 있었습니다. 저는 옆에 앉아서 저도 어릴 때 “B”와 똑같았다고 이야기했습니다. 그리고 다른 아이들이 괴롭힐 때 어떻게 대처하는 방법을 말해 주었습니다. “말은 말일뿐이야! 그냥 듣고 흘려버려! 그 말이 사실이 아닌데, 왜 속을 끓이겠어! 안그래?” 다행히 “B”는 제 말을 이해하는듯 했지만 그래도 그가 당한 일에 심기가 불편해 했습니다. 그래서 간단한 요술로 그의 심기를 달래기로 했습니다. 25전 짜리 동전을 꺼내서 그게 그의 귀에서 나온 것처럼 꺼내서 보여주고 그에게 주었습니다. “B”는 눈이 똥그래져서 자기 귀를 만졌습니다. 그 다음엔 1불짜리 동전으로 다시 다른 귀에서 꺼낸 것처럼 하고 그에게 주었습니다. 그리고 “야~ 너 부자구나!”했습니다. “B”는 웃으면서 모든 일을 잊은듯 했습니다. 이 경험을 통해서 저는 제가 교사가 될 자질이 있다고 생각하게 되었습니다. 저는 어려움에 처해 있는 아이들을 도와주는게 좋습니다. 왜냐하면 저도 똑같은 어려움을 격었으니까요! 12학년 때 선생님들에 의해서 “Peer Mentor”로 추천을 받았습니다. Peer Mentor은 상급학생들 중에서 선발되어서 고등학교 신입생들이 새로운 환경에 잘 적응하도록 도와주는 일을 합니다. 9학년 교실에 찾아가서 고등학교에서 생길 수 있는 마약, 싸움, 또래 Group에서 받는 영향등에 대한 설명을 해주고 어떻게 대처해 나갈지를 상담해 줍니다. 학교 첫날에는 교실이 어딘지 알려주고 복도에서 함께 이야기하면서 친구가 되어 주는 것입니다. Peer Mentor은 사람들의 문제점을 이해하고 적절한 충고를 해주는 법을 가르쳐 주었습니다. 이것은 좋은 교사가 가져야할 중요한 것이었습니다. 좋은 교사는 좋은 문제 해결사여야 한다고 생각합니다. 작년에 저는 교회 학생회의 임원이었습니다. 임원회는 4명으로 구성되었고 각종 행사, 학생 부흥회, 수양회등등 학생회에서 행해지는 일을 총괄합니다. 저의 교회 학생회는 7학년에서 OAC(13학년)에 속해 있는 30여명의 학생으로 구성되어 있습니다. 임원으로서 저의 일은 교회에 나오지 못한 학생들에게 전화를 해서 어떻게 지내는지를 묻고 닥아올 행사에 대해서 알려주고 수양회와 그외 행사를 계획하고 진행하는 것이었습니다. 임원으로 일하면서 교사가 가져야 할 또 다른 중요한 것을 배웠습니다. 임원은 지도자이며 다른 학생들에게 모범이 되어야 했습니다. 만약 학생들이 교사의 말을 듣고 따르기를 원한다면 지도력이 있어야 한다고 생각합니다. 학생들이 교사들을 따르고 존경한다면 교사들은 무엇이든 할 수 있습니다. 학생들은 배움을 줄 수있는 지도자를 필요로 합니다. 지도력을 가지지 못한 교사는 학생들을 가르치는데 많은 어려움을 격을 것입니다. 임원이 해야할 또 다른 것은 일을 계획하고 진행하는 것이었습니다. 교회행사가 성공을 할려면 계획을 잘 세워야 했습니다. 철저한 계획과 준비가 없으면 행사는 성공할 수가 없습니다. 예를들면 학생회에서 여름 수양회 Camp를 계획했습니다. 임원들은 수양회 기간 동안에 필요한 음식을 충분히 장만했습니다. 그러나 저희들은 혈기왕성한 학생들의 식욕을 과소평가했습니다. 수양회 마지막 날에 음식이 동이났습니다. 저희들은 굶어야했습니다. 교사는 조직력이 필요하고 만약에 생길지도 모르는 일에 철저히 대비해야 합니다. 학습은 철저히 준비할 때만 성공적일 수 있습니다. 저의 어머니는 세탁소를 하십니다. 저는 시간이 나는대로 세탁소에서 일을 돕고 있습니다. 옷을 정리하고 손님들을 대합니다. 가끔은 손님들의 불평을 들어야 할 때가 있습니다. 그 일을 통해서 대화술, 협상술을 배우고 어떻게 원만한 대인관계를 유지하는지 배웠습니다. 제가 격은 경험과 과외활동은 저를 교사가 되는 꿈을 키우게 했고, 또 교육이란 진정 무었일까? 하고 생각하게 했습니다. 가르친다는 것은 통상적인 직업이 아니라고 생각합니다. 교사가 된다는 것은 돈을 번다던가 긴 방학을 가지는 것 이상입니다. 교육은 학생들에게 어떻게 방정식을 풀고, 배운 것을 기억해서 실생활에 적용하느냐? 하는 것 이상이라고 생각합니다. 교육은 학생들을 보살피고 그들의 문제와 필요에 관심을 보이는 것입니다. 아이들은 저희들의 미래입니다. 그들이야 말로 내일의 문제를 해결하고 중요한 결정을 내릴 사람들입니다. 교사라는 직업은 아주 중요한 직업이라고 생각합니다. 교사들은 아이들에게 미래에 성공적인 삶을 사는 것을 가르칠뿐 아니라, 더 좋은 사람이 되는 것을 가르치는 사람들입니다. 저는 저의 경험과 저의 재능을 통해서 좋은 교사가 될 수 있을 것이라고 확신합니다. 어쩌면 보다 더 훌륭한 교사가 될지도 모르지요! 꼬리글: 찬이가 이 글을 쓴 후에 저는 회사 친구에게 Proof Reading(잘못된 것을 고쳐주는것)를 해달라고 부탁했습니다. 그 친구는 화학을 전공했지만, 영문학에도 일가견이 있는 친구였습니다. 그 친구가 “Excellent!!!”를 연발해서 기뻤습니다. 찬이가 교육대학에 합격한 후에 고맙다고 친구를 한국식당에 초대해서 갈비정식을 대접했더니 “야~ Proof reading을 한번해 주고 이런 점심을 대접받으면 괜찮네~! 또 Proof reading 할 것 없냐?”해서 함께 웃었습니다. Essay를 쓴 다음에 다른 사람에게 Proof reading를 해달라고 하고 조언을 받는 것은 대단히 중요합니다. 그러나 조언(?)을 너무나 많이 받아서 남이 써준 것 같다는 느낌이 들게되면 조언을 안받은 것만 못합니다.
