HAMILTON -- A Steeltown miracle saved the life of a very lucky little boy yesterday.
The 5-year-old plunged nine storeys from an apartment balcony into a soggy grass courtyard shortly after 10 a.m. yesterday.
Police say he is expected to fully recover from his injuries.
A low, deep moaning followed by hysterical shrieking from the boy's mother were the first alert something had gone wrong at a highrise complex on Jackson St. W. at the corner of Locke St. S.
"I heard a lady screaming and by the time I got out to see what was going on I saw a lady with the boy in her arms," building resident Bob Smith said, adding the boy appeared to be alert and talking.
The mother rushed her son to a nearby variety store, where she called 911.
"His eyes were open and he was bleeding a little bit from the nose," store owner Seryeong Ha said. "He was complaining that his legs were hurting him and that he wanted the pain to stop."
Paramedics arrived and placed the boy on a stretcher with his neck in a brace, she said.
The family, whose last name is Kim, came to Canada from Korea about three years ago, she said.
Their lack of English meant many residents of the building didn't know a lot about them but said they appeared to be a nice, hard-working family who made very good neighbours.
"They always smile and say 'hello' but that's about it," said Gladys Molloy. "This could have been such a tragedy but I'm so happy it looks like things are going to turn out all right."
Hamilton police said the boy was undergoing an extensive medical examination at McMaster hospital.
An investigation into how it happened has been hampered by the language barrier but somehow the boy got over the edge of the balcony before plummeting into the soft ground below.
The family is co-operating. police said.
